Anti-inflammatory Measures to Help Treat Blepharitis

Blepharitis and related conditions are inflammatory conditions. There are two methods of treatment that are directed at reducing the inflammation and not directly the eyelids. These are anti-inflammatory Omega 3 and intense pulsed light therapy. Dr. Punja may suggest either one or both of these additional therapies if your condition warrants them.

Omega 3

Omega 3 is a group of fatty acids that are found in fish, flaxseed and other foods. And, you can get Omega 3 as a dietary supplement in fish oil too.

This is an essential fatty acid that your body cannot make, so you need to have it in your diet or get it as a dietary supplement.

These fatty acids are important parts of cell membranes and are essential for healthy functioning of many body systems. They are wonderful anti-inflammatory agents as well.

If you need to boost your capacity to fight inflammation, including at your eyelids, Dr. Punja will suggest an Omega 3 fatty acid supplement.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

This treatment involved the use of a light treatment that removes damaged and inflamed blood vessels. Because inflammation is at the root of blepharitis, Dr. Punja may recommend IPL treatment to coagulate inflamed and damaged blood vessels in the skin around your eyes. The body then removes the damaged vessels and the cause of your inflammation. This can be a very successful adjunctive therapy for stubborn, chronic blepharitis.
